Re: Fault Tolerance

Yes Windows 8 is supported for Fault Tolerance.

Please Note: Windows 8 uses default virtual NIC of E1000E. Kinfly change it to E1000 or VMXNET3 as the default vNIC is not supported for FT.

After the failure, I noted in each node, there is just the mapr-core-internal package installed :

[root@bde-809447-test-mysql-0-mapred ~]# rpm -qa | grep mapr

mapr-core-internal-4.1.0.31175.GA-1.x86_64

I tried to resume the cluster creation. On the zookeeper nodes, I got :

[2015-07-30T14:28:32.196+0000] Unable to run command 'execute[config MapR]' on node test-zookeeper-0. SSH to this node and run the command 'sudo chef-client' to view error messages.

On the other nodes I got :

[2015-07-30T14:28:39.891+0000] Cannot bootstrap node test-Master-0.

ruby_block[wait_for_mysql_server] (mapr::config_metrics line 235) had an error: RuntimeError: The abort signal is detected. Some key nodes failed to bootstrap, so abort bootstrapping node test-Master-0.

SSH to this node and view the log file /var/chef/cache/chef-stacktrace.out, or run the command 'sudo chef-client' to view error messages.

Why would VMware send me a marketing email this morning with the subject line above and the following lead copy? What am I missing?

"Quickly and easily discover Windows 10 today by running it in a Virtual Machine on your Mac or PC with VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation... Fusion Pro... Fusion... Buy/Upgrade/Download Trial"

With the very-well-known "VMware SVGA 3D" issue which prevents Fusion users from installing the Windows 10 upgrade from v.8, this seems misdirected. "It's Microsoft's fault, it's VMware's fault"... whatever - all I know is when I try to install Windows 10, the Windows compatibility checker says I can't.

Am I to take this morning's email offer from VMware to mean that I have overlooked the fix for the compatibility issue? Did I miss some other way of "test-driving" Windows 10?

Or is this just extremely lame marketing which ignores the reality of the current situation for current customers?

Disappointing....

EDIT: Here's what "quickly and easily" apparently means for Windows 8.1 users (since it doesn't mean "Simply click Upgrade in Windows 8.1..."):

  1. If you haven't already done it, follow the workaround here to get an upgrade reservation
  2. (Thanks to mikeroysoft) Download the iso for Windows 10 to your Mac from here
  3. (Also per mikeroysoft) Take a snapshot of your current Windows 8.1 VM
  4. In your 8.1 VM, open the Windows 10 installation iso from the CD/DVD toolbar icon ("Choose disc or disc image...")
  5. If it doesn't autolaunch install, navigate to that DVD via Windows Explorer in your VM and install Windows 10
  6. To fix the limited screen resolution issue that you may be experiencing post-installation, you must manually load the VMware Tools installer per the instructions here.
  7. Run that installer from the mounted iso from step 6 (navigate to the DVD in your VM using Windows Explorer), and uninstall VMware Tools; then restart
  8. After restart, follow steps 6 and 7 again, but this time install VMware Tools.

And that, kids, is how I was able to "quickly and easily discover Windows 10" with VMware Fusion 7... ugh...

Workstation 11 Remote Server Status Refresh

If I am connected to a remote server, and a VM on that server is shut down or started, then the status of that machine does not change on the Workstation 11 screen until I double click on the server.  I cannot seem to find a refresh option to check the current status of a VM.  Closing the remote server tab and reconnecting does not refresh the state of the servers either.  I have to shutdown Workstation and restart it, then reconnect to the remote server in order to get the status to refresh for the list of VMs on that server.

Am I missing something?  Is there a way to refresh the status of a VM on a remote server without restarting Workstation?

Thanks for any ideas...

vCloud database messed up

Hi All,

I am facing one issue in my vCloud Lab. I have one port group created at my vDS by name vCloud_VM_NW. Earlier i was trying to create a new Network Pool (vSphere Portgroup backed) and trying to hook this with vCloud_VM_NW portgroup but was facing some issue. I posted this issue in the thread cannot add port groups to Network Pool Port Groups are in use and as per suggestion I deleted the "vCloud_VM" entry from vCloud Database (Running on MSSQL 2008 R2)

I guess during deletion I messed up the database as I have deleted entry of this port group from 3-4 different tables. Now what is happening that I am not able to see this portgroup in vCloud Director Web Console.

Can anyone help me with SQL query which will again add the port group "vCloud_VM" to vCloud director database. Please suggest the table name where that query needs to be run as I am not much into database and has limited knowledge.

Please see the attached pictures of the port group info.

Please check:

1. If DRS is enabled for the cluster that this host resides in.

2. If the VM has affinity/anti affinity rules configured. (Stating that this VM has to reside only on this host and not on other hosts in the cluster, which overrides DRS)

CA signed certs for vCenter 5.5 requirements

I’m in the process of upgrading vCenter 5.5 with CA signed certs. I'm using SSL certificates (SHA-2) from InCommon CA (Comodo), and they come with 1 root and 2 intermediate certs in the chain. (https://support.comodo.com/index.php?/Default/Knowledgebase/Article/View/991/0/incommonssl-sha-2)

From all guides I have read so far, they all talk about using using 1 root and 1 intermediate in the certificate chain.

Also, I found out that InCommon does strip the Data Encipherment in the Key Usage, although in the submitted CSRs the information was there. InCommon said that they no longer offer Data Encipherment, as well as the other CAs. From the VMware guide, Key Usage field in the certs should contain digital signature, key encipherment and data encipherment.

Does anyone know if data encipherment is a hard requirement for vcenter 5.5 certs? Also, does vcenter 5.5 support 1 root and 2 intermediates in the chain?

Thanks,

Peter

How to move my VMSphere to a new Server after a mother board crash?

Hello.

The motherboard of my VMSphere Server 5.0 (PowerEdge T410) just crashed and I would like to know if it's possible to move the two Hard Drives (SAS) for a new server with a different hardware configuration.

Thank you,

Eduardo

The only way to automate this process is through Site Recovery Manager.  Automating and orchestrating BC/DR is a huge part of the value that SRM offers. The other additional benefit is the ability to non-disruptively test your recovery plans.

Does this answer your question?

Just confirmed we are using the following driver and firmware versions:

H730 controller series with ESXi 6.0

New recommended firmware version: 25.3.0.00016

Recommended driver: continue using lsi_mr3 version 6.605.08.00-6vmw.600.0.0.2494585

BackPlane: 3.03

We are using the Intel DC 3610's SATA SSD's as our flash tier.  Just had another instance where permanent failure showed up on the SSD's and I needed to reboot the host.  Dell better get those SAS drives here soon.

Re: FT

FT will still kick in when vCenter is down. The secondary VM comes online when the primary fails.

However, in FT, when the secondary VM comes up, a new VM is created again to sustain a second failure. This will not happen if the vCenter is down.

Please refer to FT FAQs for more information.

Re: Vmware Tools in VM

When we login to vCenter or directly to host via the vSphere Client > Right Click VM > Open Console > A new window opens up.

This window is the actual console of the VM and this requires drivers for GUI performance improvement (Which is provided by the VMware tools)

Now RDP is taken from your local computer by connecting to the IP of the VM

Here the console that opens is from your local machine end > But the view inside the console is the VM desktop.

In this case the drivers are dependent on your local machine drivers > The hardware mouse, keyboard and other graphic drivers which are already installed in your local desktop > Hence, faster.

Re: Windows 10 Enterprise Unity Issue

I use Fusion in Unity mode on my main computer all the time.  Outlook on Windows is my normal email client, and I do Windows development using Visual Studio, but most everything else I do on the Mac side.

After waiting until the official release and excitedly upgrading my VM from Windows 7 to 10 last night, I was saddened to discover that Unity was behaving very strangely - sometimes it would show the Windows desktop overlapping my Mac icons, sometimes it would display the taskbar sometimes not, sometimes nothing in Windows (even running Windows programs) would be visible.  I did a bunch of Google searches and did not find anyone else complaining of this problem, so I was afraid it was only me!  But I am relieved to find this post this morning - to see that it is a known issue for which a solution is being actively pursued by Vmware.  I am a little disappointed that a solution wasn't found during the TP days to be ready for the actual release of Windows 10, but I understand that Unity is a complicated thing and it takes time.  I just hope not too much more time.

For now, I think I'll just restore my Win7 VM backup, and eagerly await news of a fix.

So with vsphere replication appliance there no way to automate this?  As per your recommendation, uninstall vsphere replication and install SRM is the only way out. I am using this tool fo vm migration to remote site.

What is the 'Database retention policy' set to?

Try restarting management agents for this host via SSH (#services.sh restart). Restarting management services will not affect any VMs that are running on this host.

Open up the vRO client and run the api explorer and search for VcVirtualMachineGuestOsIdentifier .  I believe the type is Windows8Server64Guest.

I'm pretty sure specifying a host and resource pool are mandatory but you can derive the root resource pool from the host or cluster if that is your goal.
